The Product Manager will be a founding member of the Schmidt Futures technology and talent infrastructure team, which is responsible for designing and building the foundational technology that powers Schmidt Futures’ mission of finding exceptional people and helping them do more for others together. Reporting to the Managing Director of Technology and Impact, the Product Manager will lead technology projects across Schmidt Futures. The Product Manager will collaborate with partners and other team members, approaching projects with humility, open-mindedness, and an eagerness to try out new ideas through experimentation and prototype testing. Responsibilities include:

  • Building products through part or all of the product life cycle
  • Assembling and leading teams that can ramp up quickly to solve problems
  • Serving as a resident expert and advisor on technology
  • Advising and mentoring colleagues and members of the Schmidt Futures network
  • Seeking out new opportunities for impact

 

Key responsibilities

Building Technological Infrastructure

  • Manage technology products that match talent to opportunities to maximize social impact, and makes available Schmidt Futures’ network of talent to both internal and external stakeholders
  • Work across teams in an entrepreneurial fashion to determine and respond to technology needs, focusing on software solutions that the team could scale across the organization’s talent programs
  • Product manage internal and partner-facing talent search and matching tool

Providing Technical Assistance

  • Provide direct technical assistance to grantees and partner organizations across the portfolio
  • Lead up product as part of discovery and design sprints run for partner organizations and grantees
  • Advise organizations with APM embeds

Lead projects that apply some or all of the product development process

  • Embed with internal and external teams to develop product visions and roadmaps
  • Lead research to better understand user needs
  • Run discovery and design sprints
  • Assemble a team to resolve urgent and time-sensitive projects with a technical toolkit
  • Propose, define, and scope new problem spaces for the team to engage on

Collaborate across teams and organizations

  • Work with Schmidt Futures teammates and the leaders of social impact organizations or government agencies, using product methodologies to solve issues of impact and scale and demonstrate the value of product thinking and toolkits
  • Capture and share lessons learned to help the whole team improve

Build a community of like-minded technologists

  • Help define the Product Management function within Schmidt Futures
  • Connect and assist other product managers, engineers, and designers in public interest tech
  • Work alongside and mentor our Associate Product Managers

Requirements 

Applicants must:

  • Have 5+ years as a product manager (or similar role) starting, managing, and shipping products through their full lifecycle.
  • Demonstrate experience working with and leading technical and cross-functional teams
  • Have a technical background or demonstrated ability to thrive in a technical or scientific environment, with a strong understanding of technical concepts and scientific principles
  • Have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited institution
  • Be based at the Schmidt Futures offices in New York and be able to travel within the U.S. and internationally on a regular basis as needed following company policy and permitting circumstances
